A canned-foam shave is a compromise. This is the fix.

Genuine badger hair, set into a hand-finished black walnut handle, with a travel tube so it survives your gym bag. It builds a thick, warm lather that lifts the beard off your face and puts a real cushion between your skin and the blade. That's why wet shavers still use a brush a hundred years after the aerosol can showed up.

Why Badger Hair Makes a Better Lather

Badger hair holds water, and that's why it has outlasted every synthetic that's tried to replace it. Each bristle absorbs and retains warm water, so when you load the brush from a shave soap puck, you're whipping air and water into the soap instead of smearing it around. The result is a dense, cushioning lather instead of a thin foam that collapses halfway through your second pass.

The tips are soft enough not to irritate skin, while the body of the knot is stiff enough to give you backbone, the slight resistance against the soap that actually builds lather. Working the lather into your face also lifts and softens the beard before the razor touches it, which helps reduce razor burn and ingrown hairs.

The Black Walnut Handle

Solid black walnut, not veneer and not stained hardwood. It's dense enough to give the brush real weight, so it digs into the soap instead of skating across it. The grain runs dark chocolate through amber, and no two handles are identical. It's shaped to sit in a closed hand with the knot facing down, so you can work lather into your jaw and neck without changing your grip.

Travel and Storage Tube Included

A suitcase can ruin a shave brush: crushed bristles, a deformed knot. The included tube (5.25 in. tall, 1.75 in. across) fits in a dopp kit and keeps the knot in shape, and it keeps dust off at home too. The brush stands 4.5 in. tall on a 1.5 in. base, so it sits upright without tipping. Let the brush dry fully before sealing it in the tube.

Build a Better Lather: Brush, Soap and Bowl

Prep. Optional but worth it: a few drops of Tea Tree pre-shave oil softens the beard first.

Soak. Stand the brush in warm water while you shower, then shake it out. Damp, not dripping.

Load. Swirl on the soap for 20 to 30 seconds until the bristles are coated. Our African Black Tea Tree shave soap is a hard puck built for exactly this, and our Burn The Ships shave cream works the same way with less water.

Whip. In a ceramic lather bowl, work in tight circles, adding water a few drops at a time, until the lather turns glossy and holds a peak.

Apply. Paint it on in circles to lift the beard.

Shave. With the grain on the first pass. Re-lather, then across the grain. Go against the grain only if your skin tolerates it.

The Skull Lather Bowl and Shave Cream Set pairs perfectly with this brush, and the Burn The Ships x OneBlade Element razor completes the setup.

How to Care for a Badger Brush

  • Rinse thoroughly after every shave. Leftover soap breaks down the hair over time.
  • Shake it out and dry it knot-down so water doesn't loosen the glue in the handle.
  • Air dry completely before it goes in the tube.
  • Use warm, not hot, water. Hot water damages the hair over time.
  • Expect a few loose hairs in the first several shaves. That's normal break-in. Continuous shedding after a few weeks isn't, and it's covered by our satisfaction guarantee.
